Anime: Japanese Animation

Posted by: cartoonholic on: December 17, 2009

Anime (an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of “animation”), is animation originating in Japan. The world outside Japan regards anime as “Japanese animation”. Anime originated about 1917.

Anime, like manga (Japanese comics), has a large audience in Japan and high recognition throughout the world.  Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online. Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist.  It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction.  Anime gained early popularity in East and Southeast Asia and has garnered more-recent popularity in the Western World. (from wikipedia)

There are different genre where each anime is categorized.  Stories lines up such in Action, Fantasy, Romance, Comedy, Horror, mecha, Martial Arts, Sports, Shoujo/ Shoujo Ai, Shounen/Shounen Ai, Drama and others.

As per my observation, anime movies or television series are are released in Japanese language first then sub-titled in English and if it makes to the US for release then its translated to English.

20 years before

It had been that long since I first started to watch cartoons.  Here in Manila way back 80′s, cable network are so expensive that we have to bare with the local channels. Because of school we have to wait until its 10:00am Saturday to watch a series of cartoons.

Here are some of the cartoons that we loved to watch with my siblings:

Smurfs – loving these blue creatures

He-man (The Master of the Universe) – loved also the female counterpart She-Ra

G.I. Joe – Now on motion picture live action!

Centurions

Rainbow Brite – Had a doll, the violet character.

Care Bears – Missing Grumpy Bear

Voltron: Defender of the Universe – Story repeats itself with fighting a monster then victorious then the next day fighting again and again. Other mecha transformed into big robots are Daimos and Voltes V.

Transformers – Today in cartoons it had evolved and coming back again from beginning the live action movie and still loving it. Searched on the net that a Filipino is one of those responsible on creating of the characters for Transformers and he is Floro Dery.  Missing Bumblebee as the Volkswagen.

Candy Candy – If you loved drama, romance and comedy all in one I would recommend it.  It indeed had touch my heart and made me cry.  Since the local channel removed it on television, wasn’t able to know what happened to the Prince on the hill and Candy.  As I searched over the internet found it at last after 20 years on Youtube and there finished the whole 115 episodes.

The list above are mostly on televisions. What I would like to see again is the classic “Swan Lake ” and “Little Mermaid – with tragic ending”

Those were the days.

What is a cartoon?

Posted by: cartoonholic on: December 15, 2009

The word cartoon has various meanings, based on several very different forms of visual art and illustration. The artists who draw cartoons are known as cartoonists. (According to wikipedia)

Cartoon can be illustrated on paper, mostly drawing (hand drawn or digitally on computer) and considered as flat.  Flat cartoon is what we call two dimensional.

With series of movements it is called animation. Animation has two classifications, two dimensional (2D) or three dimensional (3D).

2D was created way back 1890s using series of drawings in black and white. Then came the full color for a feature film by walt disney, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Since then it had been improving more and more and not only theathers do we see them but also in television.

Anime is also part in the 2D world created by the Japanese from Astroboy to the currently loved Naruto or Bleach and more.

3D came in 1995 with its feature film, “Toy Story.” It had evolved cartoons in a much different view in a 360 degrees angle.

Basically cartoons was created for kids. Now its not just them that love it but also those young at heart.

At my age now, they would still tease me of being a cartoon girl or tell me that I’m too old for that crap!  Hell with them, this is what I love and wanted to share to you all.

What do I want to share?  Hmmm . . . obviously all about cartoons!
